The War on Terror in Afghanistan is current and ongoing. It began in October 2001, following the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States. The initial goal was to remove the Taliban from power and find al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden. The Afghan Northern Alliance provided the majority of forces, while the U.S., NATO and other countries provided support. The officially-stated purpose of the invasion was to target al-Qaeda members, and to punish the Taliban government in Afghanistan which had provided support and haven to al-Qaeda.
