On 20 March 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq, codenamed "Operation Iraqi Freedom." The stated objective of the invasion was to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people. Less than two months later, George W. Bush declared the end of major combat operations in the Iraq war. U.S. troops remain in Iraq due to the instability of security. The projected return of our troops is undetermined. However, U.S. troops remain in Iraq due to the lack of security. The near breakout of civil war, based on the extreme tension between Sunni and Siite factions, and the effects of suicide and roadside bomb attacks, require the continued presence of U.S. troops in an almost untenable situation.
